History

Intent

The Longhill Primary School History curriculum is designed to provide children with an in-depth and broad understanding of our historical world by teaching a range of concepts within different contexts. The curriculum aims to develop pupils’ skills as historians to ensure that they not only acquire historical knowledge, but also that they can research, analyse and deduce inferences from a range of historical sources. Children will learn about local history in addition to significant national and global events. By teaching a range of concepts through different contexts, children will be able to link their historical understanding to have a better understanding of chronology and how the history has impacted modern day life. The curriculum aims to foster children’s love of history and to excite them in finding out about the past. Children will be able to compare and contrast the differences in lifestyle and society across different historical eras as well as to modern day life.

Implementation

History is our Autumn term curriculum driver. Our history curriculum is built around a line of historic enquiry that shapes children’s thinking.  The same concepts are taught so children can make connections between different events/eras and build on previous learning.

Children will be taught about historical concepts across a range of topics.

At Longhill Primary School each topic has specific disciplinary knowledge that enables children to think and work like historians.

Impact

  • Children can talk confidently about the concepts, linking to an appropriate context.
  • Children can use historical vocabulary and have a better understanding of chronology.
  • Children can talk confidently about how the past may have impacted modern day.
  • Children are able to use a range of historical sources to find out about and interpret the past. They are able to make their own judgements about what the past may have been like.
