EAL
English as an additional language
How our curriculum benefits EAL:
- Vocabulary-rich curriculum – our children come in with low levels of vocabulary knowledge (English speaking as well as EAL) so we focus on teaching lots of vocabulary and reading lots of stories.
- Pre-loading knowledge/vocabulary – used for EAL, SEN to teach new vocabulary before the lesson.
- Talk – we use talk to share ideas and then do group writes, thought showers and shared learning before individual learning.
- Collaborative learning – we use a lot of collaborative learning through the talk project and our lessons. Children work in mixed-ability pairs to share ideas and support each other.
- We use modelling, particularly in writing, to show all children the standard of writing that we expect.
- We use scaffolding to support all learners as needed.
- We use Seesaw to record non-written work so children can share their learning verbally.
- Restorative circles – we talk through our problems and feelings with adults and other children modelling how to speak and listen respectfully.
