Writing

Intent

Our writing curriculum enables children to build confidence and widens the repertoire of writing options for pupils. It helps them gain an understanding of the whole piece that they are writing. It enables them with the organisation of their ideas and cohesion between them is strengthened. Our writing curriculum also uses rich texts to help embed ideas and encourage reading in all areas of the curriculum. We have a clear focus on dictation and transcription through all pieces of work.

Implementation

Children are taught over a series of lesson each half term that uses both experience days and sentence stacking lessons. Modelling is at the heart of our writing lessons, and they are broken down into bite size chunks, this enables children to succeed when they do their own independent writing. Everything is visual and vocabulary rich which helps support all learners be successful with writing and children become excited to write. By the end of the half term children can write with flair and structure to produce a piece of imaginative writing.

Impact

We aim for all children to understand how to apply sentence scaffolds to their independent writing as they develop their expertise and there is clear progress for this right from the earliest writers. Standards in writing have improve and will continue to improve because many worked examples are provided over the year. Children will have a clear view of what a high-quality piece of writing looks like and they know how to improve their writing and make it more focused.
