PE
Intent
At Longhill Primary School we understand that Physical activity is a whole school approach. The physical education curriculum we provide is broad and balanced, allowing our children to access a wide variety of sports provision. We offer high quality teaching and learning opportunities where we develop the children’s competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities. Throughout our PE curriculum, we teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others and we offer many opportunities so all children are included. It is coherently planned and sequenced to build confidence, character, resilience, determination and respect.
Our physical education curriculum is carefully designed to include a mix of indoor and outdoor based learning throughout the year and provides varied and progressive sequences of learning. This enables pupils to contextualise their learning experiences in PE. Our curriculum is differentiated appropriately so that it provides equal access and opportunities for all. In our lessons, we ensure that subject specific vocabulary is used throughout all lessons.
Positive Experiences through PE curriculum
Our PE curriculum fosters enjoyment and motivation by promoting skills development, teamwork, inclusivity, leading to greater physical literacy, improved physical and mental wellbeing and a positive lifelong attitude towards an active lifestyle.
Implementation
All children will receive at least one full hour of engaging, quality first physical education teaching per week, as well as taking part in a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity per day. During PE lessons, pupils are encouraged to be creative in their own performance, and evaluative of their own and others’ work.
Through PE, children will develop:
Problem Solving
Resilience
Independence
Communication
Emotional Intelligence
Leadership
Evaluation
Sportsmanship
Self-Confidence
Through PE, teachers will:
- model a positive attitude to sports and physical activity
- promote participation and engagement in a range of physical activities
- seek and embrace opportunities for their own CPD
- organise a range of extra-curricular clubs
- plan events where children can perform or compete
- celebrate children’s success and personal achievements in sports and physical activity
We aim to give all children the opportunity to experience competitive sport by planning and participating in regular events such as sports days, intra-trust competition and inclusivity events. We purposefully select the right choice of events to take the children to outside of the PE lesson. We aim to give all children the opportunity to perform in some events throughout the year.
In addition to this, we also offer weekly sports clubs where children can develop skills in sports and physical activities in which they have a particular interest or expertise.
Impact
Our PE curriculum is designed to ensure that all pupils are physically active and support their mental wellbeing, while equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to lead healthy, active lifestyles that continue into adulthood. Through a broad, balanced, and inclusive curriculum, we provide all children with equal opportunities to participate, enjoy, and succeed in sport.
We create a learning environment where children can aspire to set personal goals, challenge themselves, and take pride in their achievements—both in lessons and competitive events. This approach supports the development of resilience, teamwork, and self-confidence, helping children grow not only as athletes but as individuals.
To ensure sustained progress and meaningful learning, we use a robust assessment process. Summative assessments are carried out throughout the year, enabling us to monitor pupil progress, identify strengths, and inform future planning. These assessments guide our teaching and ensure that every child is supported in reaching their full potential.
In evaluating the overall impact of our PE curriculum, we draw on a wide range of evidence. This includes pupil voice interviews, observations of teaching and learning, and video evidence of skills developed over time. These child-centered measures help us to gain a holistic understanding of how our curriculum is supporting every pupil’s physical development, enjoyment of sport, and readiness to maintain an active lifestyle beyond school.
