Intent

At Longhill Primary School the physical education curriculum we provide is broad and balanced, allowing our children to access a wide variety of sports provision. We offer high quality teaching and learning opportunities where we develop the children’s competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.  Throughout our PE curriculum, we teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others and we offer many opportunities so all children are included. It is coherently planned and sequenced to build confidence, character, resilience, determination and respect.

Implementation

Our physical education curriculum is carefully designed to include a mix of indoor and outdoor based learning throughout the year and provides varied and progressive sequences of learning. This enables pupils to contextualise their learning experiences in PE. Our curriculum is differentiated appropriately so that it provides equal access and opportunities for all. In our lessons, we ensure that subject specific vocabulary is used throughout all lessons.

All children will receive at least one full hour of engaging, quality first physical education teaching per week, as well as taking part in a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity per day. During PE lessons, pupils are encouraged to be creative in their own performance, and evaluative of their own and others’ work. PE teaching aims to provide pupils with fun, positive experiences which will encourage participation in lifelong activity.

Through PE, children will:

  • participate in a wide range of sports and physical activities
  • develop and apply teamwork skills
  • develop resilience, confidence and character
  • increase fitness levels
  • be encouraged to lead active, healthy lifestyles
  • compete in a range of competitive events
  • organise and lead their own activities
  • understand and feedback on their own performance and that of peers
  • develop and model the skills of good sportsmanship

Through PE, teachers will:

  • model a positive attitude to sports and physical activity
  • promote participation and engagement in a range of physical activities
  • seek and embrace opportunities for their own CPD
  • organise a range of extra-curricular clubs
  • plan events where children can perform or compete
  • celebrate children’s success and personal achievements in sports and physical activity

We aim to give all children the opportunity to experience competitive sport by planning and participating in regular events such as sports days, intra-trust competition and inclusivity events.

In addition to this, we also offer weekly sports clubs where children can develop skills in sports and physical activities in which they have a particular interest or expertise. Through these, representative teams are selected to compete in inter-school competition.

Impact

At Longhill Primary School, PE is taught to support lifelong learning. Our curriculum aims to ensure that pupils are physically and mentally fit, and that they are able to promote healthy, active lifestyles continuing into adult life.

We provide opportunities for children to progress in lessons and competitions, where children can aspire to set goals, achieve and succeed. Our aim to provide a rich, broad and balanced PE curriculum provides an equal opportunity for all children to participate and enjoy sport.

Our assessment for PE allows progress and knowledge to be monitored and evaluated. Summative assessments are made throughout the year to inform progress and future planning.

In aiming to evaluate the overall impact of our PE curriculum, we consider a range of child-based outcomes. This includes a combination of pupil-voice interviews, observations of learning and video evidence of skills learned
